Sophia teaches guitar to both adults and children and can cater for a range of styles and ability levels from beginner to advanced. Lessons can be individual or group based and can be tailored to help achieve whatever guitar goals you may have – please use the link above.
Classical Guitar
Classical guitar was my entry point into the world of guitar playing and for complete beginners I would strongly recommend it, especially for children. I have been teaching classical guitar for over twenty years and I have lots of experience with young children.
For younger students, I would usually advise a half hour weekly lesson to begin with, depending on age and aptitude the lesson duration may increase over time to 45 minutes or an hour. Students will require a classical guitar with nylon strings, a foot stool and a music stand. My preference of tuition material is a series of books called ‘The Guitarist’s Way’ by Peter Nuttal and John Whitworth, I then usually move on to use the Trinity/Guildhall syllabus for grade examinations.
Bluegrass & Swing
I can offer lessons in bluegrass guitar flatpicking from beginner to advanced level. From the basics of the G-run and bluegrass rhythm playing, if you just want to be able to accompany yourself singing, through to playing melodies and improvising over ‘fiddle’tunes in a band or jam setting.
I can also provide instruction in playing swing/jazz guitar, developing your rhythm guitar style, looking at more complex chord shapes and progressions, and understanding music theory.
